Guro Scott Petri

Guro Scott Petri

Head Instructor and Founder of Band of Brothers Martial Arts

Hello and Welcome to the Band of Brothers Martial Arts & Fitness website!

My name is Scott Petri.  I am the Head Instructor (Guro) and Founder of the Band of Brothers Martial Arts Group.  I was born, raised in Bloomington-Normal, and still live here with my family.  I am also an employee with our City and serve as a Fire Hydrant Mechanic.  When I’m not working, training at the BoBMAgym with my assistant instructor, Sam Spence, or leading classes, I’m involved with our church and enjoy spending time with my family.

I began my martial arts career in 1990, at age 16 with Wing Chun, Gung Fu and some Kali. In 1996, I met Ajarn Dave Rogers of the Kali – Muay Thai Association.  Ajarn Dave’s emphasis is focused on Muay Thai, although at the time, he still trained me in some Kali and Jun Fan because I was highly interested.  (Side note:  I thoroughly enjoy learning!)  Although we trained in Dave’s garage, it was the best training in the world. During my time with Ajarn Dave, I was fortunate to have met many world-class athletes including Brian Popejoy, Ryan Blackorby, and Guru Dean Lessie of the Dubuque Martial Arts group.  Ajarn also gave me the opportunity to meet Arjan Surachai Surisute and Guro/Sifu Dan Inosanto.

Throughout the next twenty years, my accomplishments include (but are not limited to):

  • Level 2 Muay Thai Instructor certification; Instructor Jun Fan Gung Fu, Kali (Ajarn Dave Rogers)
  • Instructor, Jun Fan and Kali (Guro/Sifu Dan Inosanto, 1998)
  • Level 1 Instructor, Minnesota Kali Group (Guro Rick Faye, 2012)

I maintain my certifications and ranks, and will be pursuing additional ranking in 2016 and beyond!  I look forward to continuing my training with Guro Rick Faye, Guro/Sifu Dan Inosanto, Guro Roy Hagen, and Guro Jeff Westfall and more.

I can’t wait to see what the next year holds for me and also for the Band of Brothers Martial Arts group!  If you have any questions about how you can be a part of our classes, please contact us today at (309) 261-2084, or write to us at info@bobmartialarts.com.

“We look forward to training with you!”

Lakan Guro/Sifu Sam Spence

Co-Owner and Assistant Instructor, Band of Brothers Martial Arts & Fitness

Thank you for visiting us here at www.bobmartialarts.com

Hello!  I am Sam Spence, Co-Owner of Band of Brothers Martial Arts, LLC and the Assistant Instructor to Guro Scott Petri.  I am a Bloomington native and I also work for our City.  I live here with my wife Samantha (also Co-Owner of the gym), and our two rescue pups, Angus and Sydney.  You may see them pop up on our Facebook, Twitter or Instagram posts from time to time.

My journey with martial arts began at the age of five, training in Tae Kwon Do with Master Manny Sosa.  I accomplished ranking up to Purple Belt and soon after, my interests led me to baseball, and football.  When I was in High School, a sparring match with a friend of mine rekindled my interest in martial arts.  I enjoyed learning about different arts, studying them in books and learning from friends.  At the age of 16, I found my way to Twin City Boxing and took my first (painful) class with Guro Scott Petri and Lakan Guro Joe White.  I was hooked ever since, and have been fortunate to train with Guro Scott for over 10 years.  I’ve met many great athletes and instructors during our seminar travels.  Most recently, I traveled with Guro to Marina Del Rey to train at the Inosanto Academy of Martial Arts for the International Instructors’ Conference.

I am so thankful, honored and humbled by this journey.  I look forward to continuing ranking and maintaining my certifications.

  • Associate Instructor (Guro Rick Faye, 2012)
  • Apprentice Instructor, Level 1: Jun Fan Gung Fu and Filipino Martial Arts  (Guro Dan Inosanto, 2014)

In the meantime, I enjoy training with Guro Petri and learning from other talented and knowledgeable instructors like Guro Roy Hagen, Guro Jeff Westfall, Guro Rick Faye and look forward to attending more seminars with Guro Dan Inosanto, Sensei Erik Paulson, and others!

Please do not hesitate to reach out to us for more information about our classes.  We welcome new students to train with us for their first week – free of charge.  We want to show you why we are so passionate about these arts.  info@bobmartialarts.com   or (309) 261-2084

Casey McCullough

Coach of Bloomington Team 1 Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Club

Instructor Casey McCullough

My journey in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu began in 2006 with Gracie Barra Brazilian Jiu Jitsu under Mike Lavazza (Twin Cities BJJ). We moved to Robson Moura BJJ (RMNU) shortly after. In 2007, I received my Blue Belt and in 2008 began teaching Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. In 2010, I advanced to the Purple Belt and was granted Instructors Certification from Robson Moura.
Today, I am a Luiz Palhares Brown Belt student under Professor Josh Johnson, founder of the Team 1 Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Association. Professor Josh Johnson is a 2nd degree Black Belt under 7th degree Coral (Red/Black) Belt Master, Luiz Palhares. Professor Johnson also holds a Black Belt in Judo. In 2014, the Bloomington Team 1 BJJ club began training at the Band of Brothers Martial Arts & Fitness facility. I have been welcoming students to our Team 1 BJJ/Combat Grappling classes, since. In addition to our classes, which meet throughout the week, I also offer privatized and specific training for BJJ/Self-Defense and Combat Grappling.
Professor Josh Johnson is more than a teacher – I am also honored to call him a great friend. He has shared his belief in the mutual welfare for all of the principles of Gracie Jiu Jitsu, which we practice and uphold in Bloomington Team 1 BJJ Club. Not only do we learn and practice Brazilian Jiu Jitsu together, we take care of our club, our space, and each other.
Please check out our Facebook Page: Bloomington Team 1 Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. You are welcome to post questions, comments , links, and anything that pertains to SBFS or Team 1 BJJ! Don’t hesitate to contact me at (309) 530-2660 for additional information about our club, or to schedule your private training session.
